A Guide to Traveling and Eating Healthy

Eating healthy is hard enough to do at home, but when traveling it is a whole new story. Even though it is tougher, there are many things you can do to make it easier ranging from apps to farmers’ markets.

Plan Where to Stop

One of the first things you should do when taking a long car ride while remaining on a diet is to plan out where you stop. For healthier choices it’s best to stop in bigger cities that have more options. Chances are if you stop in the middle of nowhere you will get the choice between gas station hotdogs or McDonalds.

Use Apps to Your Advantage

There are several great apps to use while staying in an unknown city. The first app is called “Happy Cow.” No matter where you are this app will give you great suggestions of vegan and vegetarian places to eat. Also, it gives you details on the food served and a rating of the restaurant.

Another great app to use is called “VeganXPress.” This app is like the last one, but instead of only giving vegan/vegetarian restaurants, it shows what is vegan on the menu of all the nearby restaurants.

These are just a few of the great apps you can use, but in my book they are some of the best.

Pack Snacks

Eating healthy on the road is all about being in control. Planning ahead by packing snacks will really come in handy. Maybe you get lost or maybe you are stuck in a horrible traffic jam; whatever it is, if you suddenly get hungry, you will have something to eat that will still support your diet.

Drink Lots of Water

Drinking lots of water will do a few things for you while on the road. First, it will keep things moving, so even if you did not workout on the day of your trip, you will still burn those calories and move food through the system. Also, drinking water will fill your stomach so you do not always have that urge to eat during the car-ride boredom. Whatever you are doing, always remember the water.

I hope some of these tips will help you on your inevitable road trips. If you have any tips, app suggestions, or questions, remember to leave them in the comments. Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Eating healthy is so tough when traveling, especially in instances where you can’t pack food! We went on vacation this memorial day weekend and packed some good healthy snacks like apples and cheese and had picnics for lunch instead of eating out and it was great. I hate getting home from a vacation and just feeling chubby and gross.

  2. Awesome info. I am not personally vegan but these apps seem like a good thing to have regardless when traveling. Do you have any other favorite apps you use?
